Block B has recently achieved an all-kill on 6 different music charts with their latest release ‘Yesterday!’ Block B has become the top-searched Kpop group on Korean portal sites, even beating out big names like Zion T. and Goblin’s OST’s! The MV shows a femme fatale playing with the feelings of all the members, and even this girl has shot to fame after the release! Although the lyrics themselves talk about a heavy topic, the vibe of the MV is surprisingly light-hearted. Block B always has unique fashion, especially Zico, and this time too they didn’t disappoint with their retro kitsch fashion!
We may be unfamiliar with the term ‘kitsch,’ but it’s defined as : “design considered to be in poor taste by conservatives because of garishness […] but having a mass appeal.” The kitsch fashion, however, is anything but “in poor taste”. Very popular in the fashion world, this trend is loved for looking messy but fancy, seemingly unfinished but perfectly calculated. Although some people are hesitant, or even appalled by retro kitsch fashion, true fashionistas will recognize this as the latest trend.
This style is making it’s way into street/casual wear, and Block B is the perfect example of this.
As Block B’s leader, Zico is also well known as a star producer, and his fashion sense is always wild and crazy.
While it may seem thrown together, every part of this outfit (from his hat down to his shoes) is perfectly matched. There’s no color in this outfit that seems to be out of place!
P.O might have the most unique retro kitsch fashion among all the Block B members.
He went for a Sherlock Homes look in Outfit #1 and then went for a softer lavender aesthetic for Outfit #2.
B-Bombs pink jacket is a perfect pastel match with his light, denim jeans. His deep-orange shirt is also a match with those brown loafers. What’s unique about this, though, is that he combines these two, separately-matching things through one outfit. By doing this, it makes it hard to pinpoint what’s a little ‘off,’ and makes this look like an effortless coordination.
The producer of their latest track ‘Yesterday,’ Park Kyung’s retro kitsch fashion includes a purple sweater paired with black dress pants; which imitates the ‘school uniform‘ style commonly seen on campus.
Taeil’s first outfit is consisted of yellow and black, two very contrasting colors. This coordination only works as there’s no appearance of another color, complicating the ‘contrasting’ theme.
His second outfit is much more tame, and can be worn casually. He also utilizes the contrasts of red and blue in this outfit.
Compared to the other members’, Ukwon and Jaehyo’s retro kitsch fashion seems to be on the calmer side and easier to wear everyday, even for those not into the retro kitsch fashion trend.
His first outfit uses pastel colors, and these soft colors create a ‘boy-next-door’ image.
Ukwon’s second outfit can be commonly seen on guys along the streets of Hongdae (one of Korea’s most popular fashion districts) .
Who else is loving that hot pink beret?
Jaehyo’s retro kitsch fashion is very minimal, focusing on colors and pattern.
You’ll notice that a reoccurring theme here is color, color, color; and this is a staple of the retro kitsch fashion trend. Putting colors that seem a little ‘off’ together to create an outfit that’s seamless.
